A origem da palavra “travel” (viagem) perdeu-se provavelmente na história. O termo “travel” pode ter origem na palavra francesa antiga “travail”[3]. De acordo com o dicionário Merriam-Webster, o primeiro uso conhecido da palavra “travel” data do século XIV. O dicionário refere ainda que a palavra vem do inglês médio “travailen”, “travelen” (que significa atormentar, trabalhar, esforçar-se, viajar) e, anteriormente, do francês antigo “travailler” (que significa trabalhar arduamente, labutar).

Em inglês, ainda usamos ocasionalmente as palavras “travail” e “travails”, que significam luta. Segundo Simon Winchester, no seu livro “The Best Travelers’ Tales” (2004), as palavras “travel” e “travail” partilham uma raiz ainda mais antiga: um instrumento de tortura romano chamado tripalium (em latim, significa “três estacas”, como em empalar). Esta ligação reflete a extrema dificuldade de viajar na antiguidade.
